The O'Reilly series of technical books is, imho, the best money can buy. When I saw the book for Flash ActionScripting, I thought to myself 'now it's ok to learn that.'

The JavaScript book has just been updated and was written with the help of the inventor of the language. The DHTML book is simply invaluable (even if the first and only edition is getting long in the tooth). If you are a budding web designer and find that you need to mess around coding, do the right thing and go O'Reilly.

They even give freebies on their website, like this article about the DOCTYPE element in HTML that has more control over things than you might think.
