Wireless bridge to an Xbox, not.
[ Posted by Dan on September 12, 2002 | 43 Comments ]

[Note: Dec 30, 2003; This relatively old post has been seeing more traffic now that Wireless tech and the Xbox have become cheaper and more popular. Read the comments left by the people below to get some good info on how to set up your Xbox on a wireless network. I have it working at my house.]

I've said before that I think wireless is the last mile solution that is desperately needed in these here United States. But, this won't work out for Xbox users who want to subscribe to Xbox Live (or so says this guy on slashdot) and this is too bad.

I'm expecting Adelphia to finally get cable modem access out to my area sometime before the end of the year and I was planning on doing the following...

  1. Bring connection into house.
  2. Patch it thru to the second floor (for full 1st and 3rd floor coverage).
  3. Attach it to a Linksys wireless access point.
  4. Bridge that with the Linksys WET bridge.
  5. Attach my Xbox (on the 1st floor) to that bridge.
  6. Make all my other machines (a tiBook running OSX and a Wintel box) talk to the access point.
  7. Go sterile from all the radiation.
Sounds like a plan, right? Well, maybe not.

Update: Nate notes below that there is a fix for this issue. Thanks Nate.

Normal Guy

I've just tried to use a linksys ethernet bridge connected to my xbox to run with my linksys wireless adapter hooked up to another xbox. So, two xboxes; one connected to the wireless access point, the other to an ethernet bridge. My son and I tried to set up a system link game of halo with no luck. The system would recognize the host xbox and let you see a game to join but when you click in it says, "xbox failed to join game." I'm going to spend sometime looking for a solution to this. I'd really hate to have to go back to stringing fifty feet of cord across the house. Anyone have any success here?

Linksys has outlined this solution on their site.

The proposed solution only works for TWO Linksys WET Bridges. What about those of us who have one XBox hooked up to a LAN, and the other hooked up to the Bridge? I am having the same problem as Bill. Obviously, the two are talking -- games show up in the other console, but no connection is enabled. Would love further suggestions.

Normal Guy

Has anyone tried hookng up two xboxes using the Linksys WET11 wireless bridges that Linksys says will work? We have tried numourous ways and could not get it to work. We tried it with Halo and when you try to join the game, it says system link failed. We called Linksys tech support several times with no help.

-Posted by Greg on February 26, 2003 08:49 PM

I will let you know if Linksys responds with an actual fix. I sent this email to Linksys on 4/3/03:

I am frustrated beyond belief. I have spent MANY HOURS attempting to get 2 XBoxes to play multiplayer Halo using two of your "Xbox Ready" wireless bridges. My friend Scot and I are computer technicians with a large computer skill set, and we've gone through your instructions over and over again (http://www.linksys.com/splash/wetxbox.asp) and attempted any other solutions we can think of. The XBoxes start to see each other in Halo, but when they actually try to join a game, the connection closes.

I know that this is some type of issue with your bridges. We can play fine through a wired network (hub). It is ONLY when we attempt to play in THIS physical configuration that we have a problem (we get the same result with Ghost Recon). And, we can both play other games via XBox Live!

Scot has spent several hours with Linksys tech support on the phone with no success.

PLEASE ESCALATE to 2ND or 3RD level support on this issue. We are frustrated and I'm considering returning all of my Linksys equipment - and I have a lot - if this issue is not handled by a senior support technician with experience configuring and XBox network with Linksys products.

As a start I want to link (wireless) two Xbox's together for HALO system link. I currently run a 100 ft cable from my house to a neighbors house. This sucks. I bought the Linksys wireless access point router with 4 port switch and the Wet11 bridge. I haven't had a chance to try and hook them up yet, but reading what you guys have been through, I don't know if I want the aggrivation. Have you been able to link them up and actually play yet? If so please tell me what you did. I could use all of the info available. Thanks

I am trying to get a game going with ghost recon, I have created straight through, crossover, and patch. I have no success in getting it to work. I am using a linksys hub. Anyone have suggestion on what I might be doing incorrectly

-Posted by mrocks on April 21, 2003 01:39 PM

I am sitting in the same boat.. I have one XBox connected to a wireless router, and the other to a Linksys Bridge. The games (Halo) will see each other, but will fail to join the game. Has this been resolved?!?

Hit me back..
Thanks.

I get the same problem. Failed to join System Link Games. My cable modem is connected to a hub in the uplink slot, and my PC & XBox are running from the downlink ports 1 & 2, and when it sees the game on the XBox, I try to join and that's when I get the message. Can someone help me find a solution to this damn thing?

-Posted by D on May 11, 2003 12:06 AM

I am having the same problem as everyone else. I get that same message. What is the deal??? Do i have to buy another wireless bridge and link those together??? What is the deal?

I'm on a Mac currently using my WET11 on my Powerbook which is accessing my Linksys wireless-G router and it's working great. But, as soon as I hook up the WET11 to my XBOX it just won't connect to Xbox Live. The SSID's are the same on the WET11 and the wireless router so I just don't get it. HELP!

-Posted by Wundredbred on May 26, 2003 12:51 AM

For all you people having problems with WET11 and not being able to connect 2 xbox's together using system link i have a solution (if you are using a LINKSYS wirless access point router and a LINKSYS WET11 bridge). All you need to do is download the latest version of the firmware for the BRIDGE (version 1.5.4) and install it. Once you have that downloaded and installed you need to download the latest setup wizard (version 1.06) in order to configure the BRIDGE, you cant configure it without it (unless you can figure out the ip address). Then use the setup wizard to set up the bridge (but remember the ip address of the bridge) then once the setup wizard is done and has you exit you need to open internet explorer and put the ip address in the address bar and go to it, both the username and password should be the same (admin). Then once you are in (able to configure the bridge) you NEED TO ENABLE MAC ADDRESS CLONING!!!

1. download firmware update for the bridge and install it
2. download the latest setup wizard, go through the setup
3. enable MAC ADDRESS CLONING on the bridge!!!

4. you can now play with 2 xbox's using system link!!!

Now to any of you who understand my instructions, have fun!

-Posted by laubsterboy on May 31, 2003 01:56 AM

I downloaded the firmware update and whenever I try to open the execute program, it says that it cannot detect a WET11. I know that it is connected because all of the LED's except for the DIAG one are lit. According to the program this means that it is working. I don't know what to do! HELP!!!!!!!!

when upgrading the firmware of the wet11, make sure that you can ping the wireless ethernet bridge. physically connect the wireless bridge using an ethernet cable to the pc. set static ip address on the computer [192.168.1.230], subnet mask [255.255.255.0]. go to dos prompt and type "ping 192.168.1.225" (default ip address of the bridge), make sure that you have reply 4 times (4 sent and 4 received).unzip the file and run the wet11 firmware upgrade file (use the 1.54 firmware).

Hi guys!

This maybe abit of a noob question but here goes!

does anyone know if I have to have a Router to use my xboc with broadband running throught me PC? I have recently Got BT broadband and BT advertises that its fully compatible with Xbox live but to my horror according to the BT/Xbox live website Id have to pay £99 for a router! The BT broadband service comes with a USB Adsl modem and our lovly Xboxes have and ethernet connection so hence the reason BP/Microsoft say you need a router! Is that true? or could I just connect some network cable to my pc's LAN Card and xbox and go through my broad band that way, like I do with Gamespy tunnel to play Halo on-line!

im not even sure this is really the right place but anyone who could help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Matt

Thanks a lot laubsterboy. After updating my firmware & setup wizard my ethernet bridges work great.

-Posted by Gary on August 23, 2003 01:17 AM

Matt,
Since you have a usb modem you have a slight problem although it is fixable...(it would be a hell of alot easier to just buy an ethernet modem...THERE ARE LIMITLESS USES!!!)
you have to configure you computer to share the connection through its lan port then all you have to do is simply plug in your ethernet cable from your lan port to the xbox and ur good to go(i havn't tried gamespy tunnel but i hope to try it out tonight!)

Hi all, I am ready to purchase a wireless bridge and and access point. I have read various articles that say I should use the wet11 ethernet bridge, is this the best or are the others just as good and do the job?
Cheers

I would get the WET11 over all other choices... I set one up for my neighbor about 7-9 months ago... so far it has had no problems except for when he pressed the reset button...DON'T DO THAT!!!...it cleared all the settings and i had to reinstall it entirely...Also make sure you keep the disc b/c if you somehow manage to presss the reset button you cannot acess without the cd...

If you have an existing network i would just go ahead and buy a linksys access point..but try to stay with the same company for hardware agreement reasons..

if you don't have a network and have not installed one b4 you must be warned its not as simple as plugging in all the cable to the right spots...also i would definately buy a 4-port wireless accesspoint router from linksys...you might also want to think about buying a siganl booster if you feel like getting a steady connection anywhere but the room of the access points...

I was planning on purchacing a linksys wet11 wireless bridge to hook up to my xbox. My forseeable problem is that i don't have a Linksys wireless network, I have a Microsoft© Wireless router. Do you think that having that type of router will better enable me or hinder me as far as configuration is conserned

Hey everyone. I have a netgear 802.11b router with a 4 port hub. Both my XBOX's are connected via Linksys WET11. I have upgraded the firmware and also the MAC cloning (as someone has mentioned) but with no success in playing Halo Via wirless system link. What IP addresses do we set the WET11 to. Does that matter ? I'm assuming DHCP is fine.

Anyone had any success with the WET11 at all

-Posted by Spencer on September 15, 2003 05:11 PM

Im able to get on XBOX live, just not system link ... maybe i should just wait for the new Microsoft wireless system link to come out.

-Posted by Spencer on September 15, 2003 05:13 PM

FWIW:

I have been able to get my xbox connected to the net thru a WET11 connected to a Linksys router/switch.

I don't use mac cloning, and I set it up to use DHCP and it's all working fine.

This was like a God send... I've been struggling with this config (2 Xboxes, 2 WET11's, and a BEFW11S4) for about a year. Xbox live worked fine but Halo over linked boxes would ALWAYS fail (...System Link failure). I had found bits and pieces on how it “should be” configured along the way but never the total picture to get it to work. I had recently downloaded the latest firmware for my router (v1.45.3) but I didn't do anything to the bridges until I saw this posting. I'm happy to say that I have been playing Halo
almost all night and will still be happy when I'm dead tired tomorrow knowing that I've got "GAME ON". My neighbor is the one who turned me on to Halo and I've been wanting to get a wireless solution for us to play. This is perfect! (I might need a booster though). Enabling the “MAC ADDRESS CLONING” on the bridges was the key to getting it to work. Hope this helps those with similar....

Thanks again.

I have 4 wet11 bridges set up on Ad Hoc when playing system link with Halo. The only problems I had were resolved when I updated my firmware and set the bridges to mac cloning enabled. There is a slight lag for the first second or so before each game but after that it's fine.

Hi, out there!

I just got my son on XBox Live, using a Linksys Wireless G Router and a Microsoft Wireless G gaming adapter. It works great! The only problem is that when we move the XBox downstairs, one floor away from the router, XBox Live still works but the computer upstairs (hardwired to the router) loses its cable internet connection! When the XBox is anywhere upstairs, internet sharing is fully enables. The Linksys technical support people don't understand this. Both the XBox wireless adapter and the computer are set for automatic IP address assigning by the router.

If anyone has any advice about this, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, - Ali -

Hi all!

I'm looking at the same problem as many here. But I don't have any LINKSYS products. I have a D-Link DI-624+ router where one of the xboxes are connected, then I have a Netgear WGE101 bridge where the second xbox is connected. Connecting a computer to the bridge works fine and when I connect the xbox I can see the game in Halo but I cannot join it. Like the rest of you :)

I have upgraded the firmware in my Netgear bridge but there is no option for XBOX MACADDRESS CLONING. I don't know if I should send it back or what?! Any idea or anyone else got the same problem?

Thanks!

I have the same problem with Halo system link. I have a wet54g linksys bridge hooked up to my second xbox. It sees the game but fails to join. Mac address cloning is enabled and everything and it still fails to join. I don't know if anybody has figured out anything else that has to be done or not but I'm stuck.

-Posted by Ryan on January 11, 2004 03:07 PM

I fixed the problem with my system link failure. I had to go into my bridge configuration through the web browser by entering the ip address and then entering the password.
I went to advanced settings
I went to mac address clone which I already had enabled but I had the pc mac address in the manual spot instead of the xbox mac address, so you have to put the xbox mac address in that spot. I'm going to try and put my pc mac address in my xbox settings to see if that works too so I don't have to change the bridge setting everytime I want to get on the internet with my pc.

Hope this helps

Does anyone know if it is possible to use simply a wireless access point attached directly to the XBOX and use the connection through a preexisting wireless router to connect to XBOX live, or can I ONLY use a wireless bridge (ie. WET11 seems to be popular)?

thanks for any help

My parents have the modem for the cable on their computer. when i try to use the gamespy arcade it says xbox not found or whatever any help would be great. after all im just a kid

I have a different set up, but the same problem as most of you.

here are what my 2 xbox's are connected to

1. hard wired to linksys WRT54G router
2. crossover cable to a computer, which is connected to the router wirelessly.....the computer is set up as a wireless bridge

i get to the same point as most of you....able to see the game, but not join.

i am guessing the problem has to do with MAC address cloning, but i don't think i can do that

does anyone have an idea?

Hello,

I would like anyones advice on how to link my Xbox wirelessly to a building that is approx. 550 feet away? I was thinking that a point to point wireless bridge that is both affordable & reliable? Any help would be great! Thanks...

PS.

If it helps, the building I want to link my Xbox to others is in line of sight to me as I can see it from my house easily. I currently have a D-Link DI-624+ Wireless Router. I'm thinking about getting a Outdoor Omni-Directional Antenna and D-Link AirPremier DWL-1700AP Wireless Access point. Do you think this will work?
