Threaded Commenting (?)
[ Posted by Dan on February 24, 2003 | 4 Comments ]

I'm considering installing a threaded commenting plugin that allows for subject lines and threading in your comments. You would be able to reply not only to my posts, but to the comments of others as well. The plugin will show comments in the familiar nested format that we all know and love.

Does anyone have any opinions on how useful this might be at this site? Like Phil, I want to think about it before I implement it (who wound up implementing it).

Do it! You know you want it...

The default export/import won't save the threading information, but if you're using MySQL it's easier to back up from there anyway.

It does add a bit more effort to re-hacking after an upgrade than most hacks, but it's so nice not to have to keep saying "but getting back to John's point" or "John: this. Alice: that. Bob: the other." that it seems worth it. Assuming you'll take advice from an admitted magpie, that is.

Yeah, I do want to do it, but after the redesign(s) I've been sort of tapped out dealing with other fixes and implementations (eg, custom comment icon tool coming soon!)

I'm also working on a more usable comment posting form. So threaded comments won't happen very soon, but I'm wondering what I'll be working on next.

Something is always next.

I'd like to try it out. Then I'd know if I want to instal it on my blog ;) Can it create subjects like email does? Like automatically generate "RE: I like that idea"? Because if it doesn't, writing out a subject every time you leave a comment is pretty annoying. ia/ slash is like that and I don't like it.

Give it a try! If it doesn't work, you can always pull it later!

P.S. How did the comment form font get so small? Sheesh. I can barely read this bug type.

Normal Guy

Are you talking indenting? I've never really liked indented threaded things, especially when you're working in a limited space like this. It's fine for reply to reply... but when you get 3 or 4 levels deep, things can get pretty ridiculous...

Just something to keep in mind. :-)

Comment posting has been turned off because I don't have enough time and will to deal with the constant comment spamming. I'm very sorry and will fix this sometime soon (soon = before 2004 ends).
