Brent Simmons, author of NetNewsWire (NNW) gets the once over by one of our favorite Mac oriented webloggers (ie, Daring Fireball). when asked if Net News Wire was always intended to be a commercial app, Simmons says...
Yes. It was the intention from the beginning, and that the main difference between the full and Lite versions would be that Lite is read only, while the full version is also a writing tool.
I definitely use NNW as a read only application, thus NNW Lite is good enough for me. The editing piece of the Pro version isn't bad at all, but I'm really a BBedit kind of guy and have gotten to the point where I need (rely upon) BBedit to be better at blog post creation.

Currently, I type everything up in BBedit and switch back and forth between NNW and Safari to assemble up the pieces of these posts. Perhaps I'm lazy, but all that switching back and forth sucks, and makes it harder to create the linkfests that each of these postings is supposed to be. And then I have to connect to my site, and log into MovableType, etc, etc. Doing all that junk is a hassle.

Even though it kind of sucks so much to switch between all those apps just to create a blog post, what else can be done? While I don't use a Mac, I do the same sort of thing that you do, except that I use metapad (Notepad clone) as opposed to BBedit. To combine all those tasks into one app just can't be done (easily, at any rate), and in order for it to be done properly will take inordinate amounts of work.

I guess that MT has a sort of work around for this - you can set up Bookmarklets for one-click publishing, but then again it assumes that you type up your post inside your browser, which doesn't work for me.

There must be some better solution, but I have no idea what it could be.

Normal Guy

One of the things I'll probably do for NetNewsWire's weblog editor is add an Edit in BBEdit button.

You'd click the button, the body of the post would open in BBEdit, you'd save in BBEdit when finished, and your saved text would be in NNW's weblog editor.

I'm a BBEdit kind of guy too, and I hate the switching back and forth. I want it to be automatic.

I have never tried NNW for weblog editing, so I can't comment on it, but I do use Kung Log and love it.

Some features:

  • support for multiple MovableType installations

  • list of recent posts

  • edit or delete older posts

  • maintain and organize locally stored drafts

  • editable menu for html tag templates, complete with shortcuts

  • post with extended entry and excerpt.

  • preview current post

  • set multiple categories for posts

  • choose to publish post or keep it as draft

  • uploading files

  • syntax-coloring

  • KeyChain support

  • spellcheck plus find/replace

I suppose I'm just lazy. Mine has a browser interface. I just type and hit post.

Hey Brent, if you do that BBedit integration idea, you'll have a new paying customer :)

I feel silly. I never thought of using BBEdit to edit blog posts, simply because of all of the work involved. Ditto what Dan said; if there's an "Edit in BBEdit' function in NNW, I'll pay. Absolutely.

Kung Log + MT-Textile is a godsend.

I'm curious why you need BBEdit for post creation.

I prefer to use the normal Movable Type Add Entry page. I can have MT on one tab, and use several other tabs for my links and other sources. When I'm finished, I'll run the post through Word for my spell check, correct any typos and then post.

My blog is authored in Tinderbox, but I decided to pony up for the pro version of NNW solely on the basis of what a huge positive impact it has had on my web usage. Money well spent and Brent deserves some cash as thanks.

Comment posting has been turned off because I don't have enough time and will to deal with the constant comment spamming. I'm very sorry and will fix this sometime soon (soon = before 2004 ends).
