While I was changing diapers...
[ Posted by Dan on May 19, 2003 | 10 Comments ]

While I was away on new baby duty (doody?) I noticed a few things about the traffic at this site, it didn't drop off dramatically. Instead, a slow decline in daily visits occurred with a somewhat steady pace of RSS feed hits (indicating subscriptions that people don't update frequently). That's a good thing I suppose, because I will be continuing to post various bits of dorky minutia.

Also, while I was in my diaper changing training seminars, I received email from Mr. Kalsey asking...

Do you want pings to the communiblog only for categories that are at least peripherally related to your blog? To which I replied... To tell you the truth, I've waffled back and forth on that, and I think that if there were a ton of pings coming in all the time, I'd say that keeping things on topic would be a good idea. But the pings are slowly coming in, and randomness and serendipity need to be embraced. I say feel free to hit it with everything you've got.
You see, the about Communiblog page sees about 8 to 20 hits a day, and that hasn't dropped off or increased over the past two weeks, so there's some interest in it somewhere. I invite everyone to feel free to ping the Communiblog as much as they want, and can keep it on or off topic. I'll just trash anything that I think isn't quite right (ie, offensive to me, boring, or otherwise useless).

offensive, boring, or otherwise useless...

that's at least 95% of the entire internet. :-)
or 99.99999% of the posts on SlashDot (if you include replies).

Most likely people see that you have other things going on and drop you from 'check more than once a day' to 'check a couple times a week'

Myself, I came back to show a friend your baby's picture. She 'awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww'd appropriately and commented on how alert she is.

i'm pretty new to the blogging thing, and particularly new at the pinging thing the time i set myself up to ping your blog...i just realized after reading your post that i had been pinging your blog for every post i put up. i guess the good thing is that you're editing...very very sorry for the distraction, otherwise! yikes...

That's cool Jon, keep the pings coming.

Do you mind if I also ping you every time that I post? I've been trying to only ping here if what I'm talking about is semi-related, but I'm to help fill up your pings list on the right if you want. :)

Yep. My basic point is that any webloggers out there should feel free to ping the Communiblog whenever they post to their own site, whether or not the topic of the post is within the realm of what I generally post about here.

thanks ;)

Let the pinging commence!! ;)

AHA--i notice that my posts show up twice--while i can't do anything about it this time, i just realized why it happens--'cos i use a bookmarklet, and usually re-edit my post to include the category later, and it pings your site a second time. now i know what's going on, it won't happen again. ;)

I'll clean up what I can when I can when I see this going on. Been busy getting back to work this week!

Hrm...for some reason, my MT has issues pinging the communiblog when I add your communiblog ping URL to the list of URLs to always ping. However, if I include the entry in a category which pings the communiblog, or include the ping URL myself, it works fine. Anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

Comment posting has been turned off because I don't have enough time and will to deal with the constant comment spamming. I'm very sorry and will fix this sometime soon (soon = before 2004 ends).
