One device to rule them all, please.

iPod Interactions I bought a new iPod the night they were released, and I think I was the first one to complete a sale at the Tyson's Corner Apple Store that night. Some tall Apple nerd with a camera saw fit to document the event on a silver substrate, so I'm guessing the guy next to me at the other register came in second.

Regardless of who won (me) a new personal habit has formed as a result of iPod ownership. I actively try to wear shirts that have a breast pocket. This is of course for the iPod to have a place to perch while I walk around the office with my headphones blaring Phasmid. Unfortunately, the iPod really is just another gadget that I carry around with me every day, and it's getting ridiculous...

Things in my bag that I carry around...

  • iPod
  • Nikon 4300 digital camera
  • Motorola Two Way pager
  • Samsung N400 cell phone
  • 550 mhz tiBook
  • various and sundry cables and adapters for connecting stuff to other stuff
Eventually, my daughter will laugh at me for carrying around so much mass and matter to achieve acceptable results in the things these devices do. Hopefully that future date is closer than I think, because carrying around all this stuff is just stupid. for what it's worth, I think I want most of this uber device to be centered around my iPod.

You should probably make some of that beltware.

What sort of bag are you using? I was using a backpack designed for laptops for awhile, but decided to get a TiBag designed especially for Thor, my PBG4. It's pretty comfortable and has a lot of storage space. And it's only $39.95 (about $60 less than my backpack).

Well, I'm using the right sort of bag to carry all my crap, but it's still too much crap. My tiBook fits perfectly into the bad, but I could use a little more room to fit the camera and cables, etc.

I'd buy the bigger bag that's like the one I already have, but it's a little pricey ($99). I paid about $70 for the one I have and it'll do just fine.

I just wish my iPod was a CDMA or GSM phone with built-in Bluetooth or Rendezvous enabled 802.11b. Now that would be sweet.

Hmm.
Nikon 4300 digital camera
Motorola Two Way pager
Samsung N400 cell phone
couldn't those all be combined into a single existing device? I know the resolution on phone cameras sucks now but I dont know what you use it for, so maybe it doesn't matter. As for the pager, can't you 2-way page from a good celphone?

Of course, ideally all of these things could be incorporated into an ipod, as well as the 802.11b (or better yet, g). I'd still rather have a choice between that, and something similar, but larger, with a touch sensitive screen and a new NewtonOS running it. :-)

but then all I carry around regularly is my old Qualcomm PCS phone... I have a new Sanyo but I like the old phone better, even if it only has a 1.5 day idle charge left compared to the sanyo's 18 days, the numbers are peeling off, and it has no magical features, (I can't even brush my teeth with it). I can dial anyone by touch, find any menu option I use frequently by touch, and check my webmail (can't do it on the Sanyo because it uses a 'real' browser, but one that doesn't support cookies or sessions; the qualcomm uses old WML or whatever.. menu driven stuff)

The problem that I have with those combination devices is that while they make you carry less equipment around, they don't really seem to work all that well. Sure, I can get a cell phone/PDA, but in order to function properly as a PDA, it needs to be larger than a normal cell phone - and I don't want to use a cell phone that's huge.

While I'd like to carry around one device instead of many, I just don't think that we're to the point yet where that's feasible - at least not for me, at any rate.

Exactly! And that's the reason I carry around several devices instead of one. the Zire 71 has a camera in it, but it's 640x480 rez, and my Nikon is 4.2 megapixel. My iPod carries 10 gigs of data and holds far more mp3s than a Zire can carry (plus other raondom data, some of it info mgmt oriented, like the Zire).

Eventually, my daughter will have one device that does all of this, really really well. I want that right now.

Why are so many people so enamored with two way pagers... ONLY RECENTLY?? hmmmm.. Been there done that.. in 1997 with SkyTel!

been there done that:

I suppose you want one device that's nearly weighless, occupies no space, and costs virtually nothing as well? When you find that genie/wishing well/four leaf clover do tell. :)

Comment posting has been turned off because I don't have enough time and will to deal with the constant comment spamming. I'm very sorry and will fix this sometime soon (soon = before 2004 ends).
