The Recording Industry Association of America has sued, and settled with, a 12 year old girl over online music file swapping. The RIAA "was pleased with the settlement" that will cost the 12 year old girl $2000. I can't believe that the RIAA thinks that suing kids is good for the music business.

"I am sorry for what I have done," LaHara said. "I love music and don't want to hurt the artists I love."

Yeah... I'm sure the collected artists of the recording industry are really hurting for the postage stamp that they'll collect from her 2000 dollar settlement, too. Maybe when she's forced to enter into child prostitution and drug dealing to pay the debt off (she does live in public housing, IIRC), she'll be sufficiently angsty to get an RIAA contract herself and get her own piece of that postage stamp.

Somehow, I'm not convinced that the RIAA has the best interests of the music business at heart. It seems to me that they're much more concerned about their pocket book, than they are for the rest of the industry.

Correction: the RIAA settled with the girl's mother.

As for who the RIAA is working for, they should be working for the Recording Industry since that is the association they claim to be. Any association is supposed to always be acting in the interests of the industry and members it represents.

Suing kids will certainly acheive the goal of scaring kids, but I'm not so sure it makes the rest of us want to buy music at stores because we feel so bad for the kid.

Comment posting has been turned off because I don't have enough time and will to deal with the constant comment spamming. I'm very sorry and will fix this sometime soon (soon = before 2004 ends).
