iPod Notes are the coolest extra.
[ Posted by Dan on September 17, 2003 | 8 Comments ]

AppleScript scroll logo There are several 'extras' on the iPod including a Calendar thingy, some contacts handling and other junk like Solitaire (which I won while on my beach vacation a few weeks back). The notes functionality is cool too, but what makes it VERY cool, or more to the point, usable and helpful, is the 'clipboard to iPod note' AppleScript.

The script does what it claims to do. It takes whatever text is in the clipboard, and smashes it into a text note, and dumps that onto your iPod. If the text is more than 4k in size (the max size of an iPod note is 4k for some reason) it will automagically split it up into the number of files it needs to cover the data, and links them together, and copies them all to the iPod.

It does a pretty good job at getting the text parsed and written out in a useful way. Tables of data lose their formatting of course, but not in a horribly unuseable way, and the auto linking of long text blobs is extremely helpful.

Very nice category icons, Dan. They look great.

On the main page, it looks like the div containing your entries is covering up part of the Communiblog list in IE6SP1 (OS is Win2kSP3, if that matters). That doesn't happen on the page for this entry, however.

I can get you a screenshot if you want one.

i need to get me one of these...i'm working on something you may find useful, and should integrate with iPod (and anything else that does text) nicely!

where can i find some user stats for iPods, i.e. how much they're in use, and for what--any good iPod developer sites around?

milbertus: The category icons weren't meant to be category icons. I just used icons that matched the content of the post in two consecutive posts! :) But it's something I should continue to do, but i think I'll try to keep them fresh, as opposed to using the same icons all the time for the same content buckets.

That overlap issue is a known issue here and is tied to large images on the page. I need to fix it, but it's on the low end of my priorities list (and getting up at 4am to feed the baby is high on the list).

Jon: I have no ideas on where to get stats, but ipod lounge may be a good place to start looking.

your link didn't work for me... but it's http://www.ipodlounge.com

I've not used the notes feature on my ipod. Mostly because the ipod now has more data than I have room for on my ibook's hard drive, so I can't sync to the ibook anymore and have to use my windows desktop for it.

Maybe when iTunes for windows comes out I can play. :-)

Comment posting has been turned off because I don't have enough time and will to deal with the constant comment spamming. I'm very sorry and will fix this sometime soon (soon = before 2004 ends).
